Blepharitis

What is it? Blepharitis is a chronic inflammatory condition affecting the eyelid margins, where eyelashes grow. It is one of the most common eye disorders seen in clinical practice. The condition involves dysfunction of the meibomian glands—tiny oil-producing glands along the eyelid edge that secrete the lipid layer of the tear film. When these glands become clogged or inflamed, the oil thickens or stops flowing, leading to an unstable tear film, bacterial overgrowth, and irritation. Blepharitis is often associated with skin conditions like rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis (dandruff), or acne. It is typically bilateral (affects both eyes) and follows a relapsing-remitting course, meaning symptoms can flare up and subside over time.

Prevention & Lifestyle Tips

When to See a Doctor See an ophthalmologist if home care doesn't improve symptoms within 2–3 weeks, if you develop eye pain or vision changes, or if you suspect an infection. Doctor's Note: Blepharitis is a chronic condition that requires lifelong management, not a one-time cure. Consistent lid hygiene is the single most effective strategy to control flares and maintain comfort. Think of it as "dental care for your eyelids."
